NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HAVING YOUR CHILD ATTEND AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER 2008!
The Black Student Fund, which is the area's primary resource for information and financial aid for African Americans interested in applying to and attending independent schools in this area is hosting its annual School Fair this Sunday, November 11 from noon to 3:00 pm at the Washington Convention Center downtown.
There will also be an Open House at the Black Student Fund offices on December 1st and 8th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm where you can enroll your child in their program. Parents interested in enrolling their children should attend the open house and bring along copies of report cards and standardized test scores.
In addition, a number of the independent schools in the area have given notice of the dates for their individual open houses.
Please access www.blackstudentfund.org for more information on the Fund and the address for their Open House.
A notice about the School Fair is attached....
A schedule of the various open houses is attached....

WE URGE YOU TO ACT NOW IF YOU ARE CONDSIDERING A SCHOOL CHANGE FOR NEXT YEAR!
------------------------------------------ Tip 93 - Connect for the Success of Your Child ------------------------------------------ You attended Back-To-School Night and you're on helping-with-homework duty, but that's not all you should be doing this new school year. You should be building a relationship with your child's teacher, who is an important person in your child's life. Public schoolteachers usually spend their own money on classroom supplies, so she would be grateful if you donated books in good condition. If your child is studying animals and their environments in science, and you read an article on cnn.com about polar bears and melting ice caps, print it out and send it in with your kid. You just gave the teacher a gift of 15 minutes of engaging instructional time. Let the teacher know that she is appreciated with a kind note or a few words. Being generous to your child's teacher is the right thing to do - but if your child gets in trouble or needs extra help, you will be glad that you've been helping her with her very difficult job all year long. Tip from the Education Committee
When you think about holiday shopping for children this year, consider buying books instead of toys.... With the current rash of safety recalls for lead and lead paint, endangering children and adults alike, this is the perfect time to introduce the youngsters in your lives to a variety of new books.... Good for critical thinking, vocabulary, spelling and plain old interest.... The Education Committee has compiled several lists of children's books that will be available for review at church and on the HC website.

Other parts of the country are more familiar with the ACT. Since colleges admit students from all over, most colleges take both. African Americans generally score better on the ACT. The SAT measures aptitude, the ACT measures achievement. Our students should really look at taking both.
